This document shows you how to resolve issues with Gemini when using it with Google Cloud.
Understand setup errors versus behavioral refusals
When you interact with Gemini in Google Cloud, it is important to distinguish between setup errors and behavioral refusals.
- Setup errors: These errors occur when an administrative or configuration issue prevents the service from running. For example, if you don't have the correct IAM permissions or if the required API isn't enabled, you might see error messages or the Gemini pane might not open. To resolve setup errors, you or your administrator must adjust your project settings or permissions.
- Behavioral refusals: These responses occur when Gemini is fully functional, but the model declines to answer your prompt. For example, the model might refuse your request if the prompt violates safety policies, is about non-Google Cloud products, or has a low level of confidence. To resolve behavioral refusals, try refining your prompt by phrasing your request differently, or ensure your question focuses on Google Cloud services.
You don't have permission to view product settings
If your user account doesn't have the necessary IAM permissions to view or modify a specific product setting, then you might see an error message similar to the following:
You do not have permission to view this product's settings. Ask your
administrator for the missing permissions, or select the pre-configured
IAM role.
To resolve this issue, you need to be granted the appropriate permissions by your Google Cloud organization administrator.
